The clockwise rotation comes from the gnomon, the solar clock. In the north hemisphere the shadow of the gnomon moves clockwise and on the first mechanical clocks the designers made the hands move the same way. Should the modern clock have been invented in the south hemisphere, the backward clock would be the rule …
