the smartwatch repeatedly crashes when try to open slide menu in play store.

You cannot open that menu because slide right is the BACK action.
You have to long press the power button and you will see a circle at the top of the power menu - press it to enable the square view and then tap cancel at the bottom.
You can then access the top left menu in the play store.
