Very hard to understand what you mean. You installed b1.0.4 and after switching to complex skin launcher ask you to modify system settings? Its cause launcher has catch error. Send me those skin which you try apply. And another one, if you ask about step by step instalation (like 1.4, then 1.5, then 1.6) its no point. You can install latest version without problems.
